Myrtle spurge, also known by the names "donkey tail" and "creeping spurge" is a succulent that is native to Europe and Asia Minor.

Although sometimes grown as a decorative plant in gardens, particularly valued in xeriscaping in dry areas, myrtle spurge is often considered noxious, and is invasive in some regions.

Its cultivation is illegal in Colorado.

This brings me to why you are reading about Myrtle Spurge, here and now...

I got an email from clients/friends who purchased property in the Spanish Hills neighborhood of Boulder, a short time ago.

After speaking with a neighbors professional landscaper, they were alerted to the fact that they had a noxious weed growing all across the bank at the front of their house. They did some research, then Mike spent the best part of 6 days spraying (not on windy days) and removing the weed. He wore a haz-mat suit to protect himself from the poisonous content of the weed.

The milky sap of Myrtle Spurge can cause significant skin and eye irritations. It is recommended to wear goggles, glove and protective gear when removing plants. Children should not be allowed to play with or around this species. Pets should also avoid making contact. The species has been found to be allelopathic.

When we got back from Mexico we got a certified letter from Boulder Co. Land Use office telling us we have to eradicate it and it even had a PHOTO of the front bank, covered in it. Also a map with the spot marked. They must've come just before he started killing it! Anyway, it's all gone and I've rung to tell them that we're on top of it.
I was surprised that they were so diligent and exacting.
She went on to tell me that she and Mike spread the word to neighbors, about the weed and about the letter from the Boulder County Land Use office.

One neighbor replied: "That it puts a new perspective on any possible skinny dipping in the hot tub if there are folks running up and down the roads with cameras!"
